Another super image in the cello series. This is such good subject matter for portraits as you could never re-create these expressions without the artist being engaged in her work. Movement in the hand is great and the tone is complimentary. What speed and aperture did you use (and camera). Flash is obviously out of the question.
I am inspired to take similar shots although I wouldn’t mind climbing some of those mountains you are in
Charles, I have shot all of the “Prelude the Paris” series with my Nikon D100, using my 80-200mm lenses. They were playing in the shadow, so it was somewhat dark. Being the flash not an option, I had to push the ISO equivalent rating of the camera to 800 and open all I could (to f/5.6) to keep the exposure time to something reasonable (1/90 or so). The D100 detector is quite good, and even at the ISO 800 setting the noise is acceptable (I easily dealt with the noise afterward, with some simple photoshop post-processing). Still, shooting at f/5.6 people that were moving all the time was not easy because of the very limited depth of field, and many photos resulted blurred because the autofocus was not fast enough to track them. If you want to try something similar, be prepared to shot many more photos than the ones that you will actually use.
