Grooves

The last couple of weeks have been quite grueling, with the rush to finish a poster for the American Astronomical Society summer meeting (it was in Hawaii, but I still prepared a poster for somebody else in my group to present), and then a trip to California for another meeting. Not much time at all to work on photography or even post on my blog, so the first post after the deluge is from the archive.
The photo is an aerial image I took flying back from Seattle, somewhere in Washington State. The “vertical” parallel lines that cross cultivated fields, rivers and hills are gigantic “grooves” in the terrain. My guess is that these are scars from the last ice age when all northern US was covered from huge glaciers. Any idea?

A glacial retreat makes perfect sense as far as explaining the terrain here - this is a great natural abstract as presented; I really had to get my bearings on first viewing this, one of my favorite photographic phenomena 
It`s got to be the ice, I can`t think of any other logical explanation. Cool photograph!
Very interesting shot. I had no idea what I was looking at until I read your comments. I took it for some kind of decaying patio or cobblestone street.
This is a fantastic image. For some reason it reminds me of an M C Escher print. Very surreal with repeating elements throughout.
very interesting shot - like a tapestry - feel the movement on the earth with those lines.
