I can’t remember where I read it, but once upon a time I picked up the phrase “distill the image.” In other words, use the most interesting bits and crop out the rest, either in the camera or in later processing. I always try to take that to heart, and it usually makes for a stronger image.
Sounds as though you’re doing the same thing. It works in this photo, where the serpentine shape of the water is the focus. Nice job. To answer your question, I’ve been more successful lately in overcoming my reluctance to shoot photos of people. I’m still pretty shy that way, but I’ve gotten much better about it.
Both are excellent images, they’re just different. I find my photography changes as my moods change. I like to think I’ve improved over time, and I’ve widened my skill sets. Sometimes I find a particular style I like, and I spend some time exploring that.
I`ve been looking through a lot of my “old stuff”, and sadly, I have to admit I like them a lot more than my latest photos. On the other hand: I`m a big fan of Neil Young, and every time he`s got a new album I`m disappointed.
But what happens is that I start to like that other album I hated a year ago! Is that a good sign, or should I get proffessional help?
tricky cause i took such a long break last year ... i think i liked where i was going with my photography before i had to stop and i feel like its been a process of relearning and refinding myself as a photographer so i find myself going through similar phases that i’ve already gone through which is okay cause i’m excited to see where i end up ...
alfred ~ you crack me up hon ..
First, this is a lovely shot and I especially enjoy the depth of detail in the foreground shallows.
In 2.5 years or so of posting daily I’ve still not tired of the quest for the photographic ‘me’ - I’ve also not quite settled, either. Maybe by the 3-year mark. One thing I’ve been much more conscious of is the image capture and I’ve been much more methodical in this important initial creative phase, much more aware. I feel that I’m shooting fewer frames per outing, but that the resulting images are stronger as a result. I suppose I’ve been trying to treat the digital process more like it was analog, film-based.
