This Sunday I went, again, at Crane beach. Boston is being hit by the second heat wave of the summer, with temperatures approaching 100 F and high humidity. Given that Mayli is traveling again (she is in Venezuela, now) I looked for some colder temperature along the north shore. I found what I was looking for. As soon as I was at the beach the sky got covered by thunderstorm clouds, and soon enough was pouring, with lightning bolts and all. The place was quite dramatic, so I stayed there to shoot through the storm (getting a very partial cover below the lifeguards shack). This kid was running around under the rain, happily getting drenched and running back to his father each time a lightning bolt was falling too close.
When I was his age I could never do that. As italian mothers go, you cannot just run around when is raining (even if it is hot outside) because you can get cold. Italian mothers want you to wear a warm shirt even in the midst of summer, because “otherwise you get cold in the belly”. The funny part is that I got so conditioned that even now I still make sure to have my belly covered in the slightest breeze... my wife really likes making fun of me about my cold belly. Apparently this kid and his father didn’t have such problems. A friend of mine, from Finland, used to bring his kids to play in the rain in the middle of winter (and I saw them bathing in the ocean in April). I guess you need to be resilient to survive in the Finland weather.
