After the end of the American Astronomical Society meeting in San Diego, California, I went with Jennifer and Alessandro to La Jolla, to watch the sunset on the Pacific Ocean. We arrived at the seaside walk one hour before the sun started to set, so I had some time to snap a few photos on the rocks on the side of the beach before it was too dark. At the end of the stairs going from the road level to the beach there was a sort of “grotto”, like a tunnel, with the beach on one side and the sea on the other. I asked Jennifer to pose for me in the darkness, to experiment with her silhouette, against the wet rocks at the end of the tunnel.
I quite like the result, especially for the way her arm is separated from the wall thanks to the tangent light. Unfortunately the same trick didn’t work on her legs that are merged with the ground. Sure there is a lot of black in this photo, that I didn’t crop because I wanted to keep the reflections in the wall at the right, and on the pavement on the bottom. Of course I could have made different choices in the composition and exposure: what do you think of the result, and what would you have done differently?
