To go to the
Las Campanas Observatory, home to the
Magellan telescope, one has to flight to
La Serena, the second oldest city founded by the Spaniards on the Chilean coast, from Santiago. I took this photo while flying there for an observing run in 2002. Chile is on a narrow strip of land between the Pacific ocean and the Andean mountains that cross the whole Southern American continent. The mountains seen from the airplane window can reach elevations of 5,000m (15,000ft), some of them mighty volcanoes, and are covered by snow all years around.
