This is one of the two Magellan telescopes (Baade), at the observatory of
Las Campanas, in Chile. The shot was made with my old Olympus Camedia 3000Z, which is now used by my sister in Italy. Since it is quite difficult to get very long exposures (it was pitch dark) with the Camedia (which is, after all, a point and shoot digital camera), this photo was taken as the sum of many individual exposures added together with the
gimp (the closest thing to photoshop, for the Linux operating system). Considering that I couldn’t see really anything while I was taking the picture, I think the photo came out pretty interesting, with a very eery look.
As you can see, there were clouds in the sky, and that explains why I had time to play with the camera, instead of being working at the telescope.
On a side note, I had to send my Apple Powerbook to repair, because of the infamous
white spots affecting the early models of “Aluminium” powerbooks. The repair will be free, but I will have to stay without laptop for at least a week. Given that I am doing all my photo editing jobs on the laptop, until it is back I will post only old photos, like this one.
