Cochiguaz, Chile (Jan 13, 2006)

Cochiguaz is at the end of the road. More than a village is a camping site, with communal facilities for spiritual wanderers and UFO seekers. The campsite is where two rivers meet, the “Turbio” (“The Dark”) and the “Claro” (“The Clear”). Ying and Yang.

At some point the road becomes a matter of faith, and I stopped in what looked like the courtyard of an isolated house. With a shack on the side, an orchard with the biggest cabbages I have ever seen (maybe they were not cabbages), and a horse grazing around. And this old truck warming up in the summer sun, watching longingly at the eternal mountains he climbed in its youth.

That is a lovely effect you have achievd with this black and white photo. Also, great tonal range in the picture. Did you use a photoshop blur layer blended in somehow to achieve that?

Yes, I added some Photoshop blur on a semitransparent layer to tone down a little the harshness of the light. And then some selective dodging and burning to bring out details from the shadows without losing contrast.

Even with the current temp here at -7F, I can feel the radient heat coming off the truck and the ground. Excellent glow to this image, really puts me there.

There’s a commentary here about man’s impositions on the natural world, but it’s subtle, not demanding, understanding rather than strident. Nice editorial.

I can almost hear the metal of the old pickup, expanding in the heat of the day - nice how a b/w shot can communicate the idea of heat so well. Lovely tonal and dynamic range here.
