I use Picasa to arrange photos: although I don’t know about how it fares for more demanding things (handling large amounts of RAW images etc) it’s fine for what I use it for- which is sorting out the few hundred photos I have taken. Whether it’s the pro-level solution you’re looking for, it’s free so worth a go, I guess.
It’s made by google.
I fumbled around with image management for a while, since I shoot a relatively large number of photos. I used Imatch (PC only) for a few years, and found I didn’t use it as much as I should because I really didn’t like the interface. After reading “The DAM book”, which I highly recommend, I shifted to Iview MediaPro3, which I like very much. My whole style and philosophy of image management took a beating, but after this paradigm shift, I find that I’m much more organized and have a much more reliable system, both for image safety and easy of location.
Great evening light. Thanks for the software review and the following discussion. I’m always looking for new ideas. I’m afraid I don’t have anything constructive to offer as I’m still using batch rename in Photoshop and doing almost everything else one at a time.
gorgeous moon shot - what a perfect sky and interesting tree. I tried leaving a comment last week but was unable to do so for some strange reason. glad to see you’re back.
are you using a mac w/lightbox?
Yes, I am on a mac. I thought about trying Aperture, but they say it is quite power-hungry, and I am working mainly on a laptop (barely at the minimum of the requirements).
I’m impressed. Really impressed. I’ve linked you from my page. Greetings.
I use the folder system, and open each image (that looks interesting) in photoshop, where I usually just adjust levels, and/or remove dust from scanned files.
Lately, I`ve started trying out Raw-shooter. I find it very easy to use, and it is also possible to “batch-convert”. You can download it for free, and see if you like it. Oh, and I like the way the burning bush is reaching for the moon...
Great capture, as always
I’ve tried Extensis Portfolio and found it nice. But I’m still a kind of unorganized person by nature...
I love that moon, and the late light sets the bush ablaze.
This is my first trip to your blog, and i have to say the photos are very good. I love the color contrast between the blue of the sky and the red of the tree and the ground in this photo. As far as photo organization, if you run apple, you should give the new “Aperture” program a try, it works wonderfully. Also, how was Chile? I am going to be living there for a a year in 2007 and I am already beginning to get excited. Keep up teh good work!
A very dramatic looking piece you have here.
Really love the composition and the feel of scale. Colors, lighting, details, ...... very nice!
I agree, nice images you have here, I’ve been enjoying exploring your posts.
For image collection management I use Extensis Portfolio, a bit pricey but about the only thing around at the moment that deals with large image collections with metadata as a serious aspect of image managment. Well worth a look if you have a large collection and want to attach/ embed metadata to the image files or find an image using specific search criteria. I used Picassa (PC only ?) for a while, good for the price, free, but very limited. Adobe have free Photoshop Album version I’m testing at the moment, appears good but like Picassa it’s quite limited. I havn’t tried Aperture yet, I’ve read it’s still a bit buggy at the moment, how very Apple. The whole RAW/ catalogueing thing is still in development really, another year and most of the major image collection managment systems will deal with them relatively smoothly.....hopefully. Jeremy
