From the mountain

Las Campanas, Chile (Jan 8, 2006)

This is the view from the observatory. The sandy valley at the bottom crosses the semi-desertic landscape and ends up at the Pacific ocean, near the Reserva Nacional Pinguino de Humbolt. This is one of the places I may visit the following days. As I am writing I am preparing to leave the observatory to go back to La Serena, where I will spend the next couple of days resting.

The last two nights were excellent, with a “seeing” of about 0.4 - 0.6" (which is good) and a stable sky. We managed to do about 2/3 of our program, which is not bad, given the conditions of the first two nights.

I like the rich flavor of the rocks in the foreground in contrast to the dry and arid texture of the desert behind. I also love that golden shrub...it’s like the burning bush of biblical lore. Great landscape.

I love the way the rockclose up and clear echo the forms of the immense (I presume), hazy mountains in the distance.

I could just sit on these rocks and let this beautiful scene wrap itself around me, for hours. Breathtaking and I wish I were there.

Beautiful view, an image of great quality ; exposure, tones, colors, framing. and I don’t even know much about correct photography, but I know a good photo when I see one
