La Silla, Chile (Jan 6, 2006)
Do you see the little white dots on the crest of the mountain? That’s La Silla astronomical observatory, as seen from the plateau up from La Serena, Chile. La Silla is the oldest of the ESO (European Southern Observatory) sites in Chile, which is the southern paradise of astronomy (the northern one is Hawaii). I took the snapshot from the back-seat of the van driving me to Las Campanas, other observatory not far away, managed by the Carnegie Institution. I have an observing run for the next few nights. It took me more than 24 hours to get here from Boston. After the run I will take a couple of days off to drive around the region.
Expect more photos from Chile in the coming days.

What a gorgeous, barren landscape. I’ll look forward to more!
What a view! The ‘liitle white dots’ are great. A technological outpost at the peak of this rugged terrain is a great reminder of how far the hand of man stretches. Have fun. I’ve decided you clearly have one of the coolest jobs in the world!
