Mist in the Valley

Paramo andino, Venezuela (Dec 22, 2005)
At the head of the Valley of Merida, in Venezuela, there is a small road leading to the village of Piñango. The road crosses a region that is called “Paramo Andino”, which is a dry highland with an endemic vegetation very specific of the area. In our December vacation we only had time for a short excursion at the beginning of the road, where we stopped briefly, as the sunset was approaching and the mist was filling the valley, to watch the frailejones growing all around us.

The mist seems to hang lovingly in the light wisps of beauty balanced in the valley. Really stunning!

At first I thought those were sheep grazing. The mist is amazing...feels as if it is advancing on the lens. The brightness and glow of the spot in the foreground is just a touch distracting, as it steals the attention from the great layers of tone in the mountains, but at the same time it does help to lead the eye down the winding path through the hills, which is nice.
My first thought was that the sheep looked weird! I love a road that has a mystery at the end...what does the village of Piñango look like? what do people do, why do the live there.
